Anipike, Flashback!

It’s been the talk of the Internet (or at least the otaku part of the Internet) about Anipike finally going down after 20 years. I had quite a flashback because Anipike was the shit back in the day. It’s the source or all things anime related and 90% of my otaku friends probably visit that site at least once a week.

Oh, oh! While on the topic of vintage websites, my favorite website back then is still around the Internet but is not updated anymore. Hello, Kurama’s Territory! It used to be in Geocities though (this site as well spawned from Geocities). I used to send love poems there weekly for Kurama (Yu Yu Hakusho). I used to also write fan fictions using Ken (from Hidaka Ken of Weiss Kreuz) as a pseudonym too. And I love collecting anything Sailormoon from stickers, to cards, stationary, pens, paper dolls, etc. I even have that old Moon Stick. I think I still have most of them in my mom’s old house with my X/1999 VHS.

Information about anything manga, anime, J-pop/rock, etc. related back then are not as wide as it is today. Much more, if you wanted to acquire actual goods. For example, when my brother was all over Utada Hikaru’s First Love Album, we literally went to each and every mall in Metro Manila just to find that goddamn album, on which we found finally at Tower of Records, somewhere. I’ve also spent a considerable amount of money (ugh, shipping fees!) and serious amount of effort just to acquire an original VHS copy of X/1999 OVA. I can’t even remember how I happened to acquire one, I just did. I still have that VHS and I will probably have it until I grow old, and my hair turns grey, while my face gets filled with wrinkles. And even after all those years, X/1999 still remains unfinished. D:

Ghost In the Shell: Arise

If there’s one animgits_arisee series I’ve been so crazy about since my childhood, it would be Ghost In the Shell. It was the first anime I’ve ever watched, and I will continue to be crazy about it until I get granny old. So when I heard that there’s a new GITS series, I couldn’t contain my excitement to get my hands on the copy. When I finally got a copy of Ghost In the Shell: Arise, as usual, I patiently waited for everyone at home to be asleep before watching.

Ghost In the Shell: Arise will be a 4-part series of OVA. As of this typing,  I’ve only seen the first of the quadrilogy, called “Ghost Pain.” The time frame of Ghost Pain happened before Kusanagi Motoko was recruited into Public Security Section 9. Being her usual self as a super hacker, Kusanagi got herself voluntarily involved in a case regarding her ex-superior. I think she was trying to prove his innocence. Along the way, she ended up getting hired by Aramaki as a hacker. Batou and Togusa were also into different cases with their own and somehow ended up arriving with the same conclusion that their cases were somehow related.

I think Kusanagi was way hotter in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex but let’s leave it at that. You would find a younger Kusanagi who is less experienced and less mature as the other series. A little too hot headed too, in my opinion, but I kinda like this side of Kusanagi. I can’t wait to watch the remaining 3 other more OVA! 😀

Jollibee’s New Cheesy Bacon Mushroom Champ!

Jollibee has a new burger! THE *drumroll* Cheesy Bacon Mushroom Champ!

Cheesy Bacon Mushroom Champ!

I know, I know. It looks super yummy! It cost PHP 129.00 if ala-carte and PHP 165.00 is it’s value meal. It actually taste good, too. But I would still prefer Wendy’s Bacon Mushroom Melt burger. Even the bacon is crispy (well, at least the one I ate)!

The fun part of it is this:

It’s Thor‘s hammer, Mjolnir!

One of the perks living a few steps away from Jollibee is that you get to try their new stuff as soon as you hear about it, and you don’t run out of promotional toys and stuff. It was the same with the Avengers mug I got last year.

This Mjolnir is a promotional toy for the Marvel movie, Thor: The Dark World, that’s coming out on October 30th 2013 in theaters. It’s a 1 GB USB flash drive. The good ting about is is that the it’s pretty well made and it doesn’t look like those cheap ass toys you find along the streets. the bad part about it is that it transfer really slow. It’s probably a USB 1.0 or something. But still, you don’t buy it for the USB anyway, you buy it for the toy itself. In this day and age where HDs matter a lot, you wont save much with a 1 GB space, anyway.

Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun

So recently, I’m addicted to this anime called Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun. Originally, it’s an adaption from a 106 volume novel series called Nansou Satomi Hakkenden by Kyokutei Bakin, but the story line in this anime is somehow different, I read. There’s also a manga version by Abe Miyuki, and I’ve been reading it, however scanlation had been really slow.

Honestly, I wanted to read the novel. But I couldn’t. I’m limited by the fact that I couldn’t read or even understand Japanese. And worse, that it’s from the Edo period. If translations are available, like Vampire Hunter D, I would definitely read it.

The series is a bit more on the darker drama shoujo type with occasional comedic scenes. There are violent scenes and funny hints of BL. It runs two seasons, so far, and it’s still ongoing.

hakkendenThe anime story line revolves around a sickly kid named Shiro. Five years prior, his entire village was wiped out by a plague, leaving 3 survivors – him and 2 other childhood friends. When he and his friends were dying, someone came and offered him if he wanted live for a price. Wanting to live, he took in the spirit of an old Japanese sword named Murasame. Having Murasame live with him in the same body, gives him the ability to see a sense supernatural things, special powers and eternal youth.

He was living quietly for 5 years until one of childhood friends got kidnapped by the Church who were “collecting” children with supernatural powers. He chased after his friend to a grand mansion where people from families that harbors sacred beasts lives. He lived off there for a while also helping out church with some odd jobs, here and there. Eventually, he was given the task of searching for 8 special beads (I guess this is where the “Eight Dogs of the East” from the title comes in) of which he and his other childhood friend each owns one. The people who owns the 6 other more beads are all gathering around him, one after another, when he doesn’t even notice it.

There’s also something of a darker story that lingers in the background as you go on with the series. You get to see how much people sacrifices for certain goals, and secrets certain people hide. There are side scenes that are little by little being revealed throughout the series. When I first notice this, I thought, “Why are there unnecessary scenes inserted randomly in this series?” It was until I got half way when I realized that these short “unnecessary” scenes are glimpse of supposed bigger story later (not yet revealed as of this posting). As soon as I finished the first season, I re-watch them again to confirm what I discovered.

I’m really hooked with the story. I love that it’s all about supernatural beings and that it has sacred beasts and such. I also love that it’s a bit dark, dramatic and comedic at the same time. I was hoping for more violence to it, though. But since it’s a shoujo, I guess I’ll compromise. All in all, I’ll give this anime a 9/10.

I hope that they would really finish the story and not leave it hanging like most anime.

NERV Theme for Android

Since I had my first android phone, I’ve been wanting a NERV theme that actually looks decent. And I just spent an entire day tinkering my newly installed NERV theme! Huzzah!

For those who doesn’t know, NERV is a fictional organization run by UN in the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion where everything sets. I love this anime and has been a fan to the point that I might even join it if it were to become a religion.

You have no idea how ecstatic I was when I learned of this NERV theme via my Android Pinas co-authors and friends Mark and Jepoy. It was a dream come true. I installed it right after my older brother Cyanogenized Tabby, his Samsung P-1000 tablet that I was borrowing as a temporary phone since I lost my beloved Amadeo many months have passed.

This NERV theme is a fan-made replica of the theme used in the SH-06D limited edition NERV phone by docomo. It looks almost like the real thing. You can get the same NERV theme via theNBT‘s deviantART post here or via his XDA Developers forum post here. I suggest the later because it includes a more detailed instruction and a video in case you got confused, somewhere.

There are 2 versions of this theme. The original one that uses Nova launcher, UCCW, together with several other apps, and the UCCW theme only. The original one is more interactive, but the later one is lighter. If I have to suggest one, go for the original one because the UCCW theme one is more or less just static.

This theme is actually composed of several widgets on a single page, and sometimes, on top of each other so it actually loads a bit slow when your mobile unit is a little on the low-end side. The nice thing about it is that you can see everything important you wanted to see in one page such as battery level, CPU meters,  date today, weather, etc. The key thing about it is that you have to use a 4×6 desktop grid to make everything fit nicely on your phone. Sometimes, something doesn’t really fit well and you have to re-size it manually via the UCCW app. There are some parts of it that you can customize too like that area where it says “User Phone No” where you can actually change in your real phone number, but since I’m not fond of displaying my phone number, I opted to use the default. Under the “Unique No” box, however, I did change mine to say “N3RV-TKY3-3Ur1-325.” The battery, weather, etc. parts all work. The only thing that didn’t work for me was the Music Player. For some reason, it doesn’t seem to be compatible with my music player. I tried installing other players that the particular app said it supported but to no avail. And after a few hours, I gave up on it and decided to just remove it.

Overall, it’s the best theme I’ve ever had! 😀
